About William H. Johnson
William H. Johnson (1901–1970) was an influential African American painter whose work reflected both his travels and his deep roots in the rural South. A key figure of the Harlem Renaissance, Johnson blended modernist techniques with folk-inspired imagery, portraying African American life with warmth, dignity, and vibrancy. After studying at the National Academy of Design and living in Europe for over a decade, he returned to the U.S. to create his best-known series of expressive, colorful scenes.
