Rekenrek: dutch for “calculation rack.” Kind of like an abacus but much simpler and proven to increase number sense. Similar to the original design by Adrian Treffers, a mathematics curriculum researcher at the Freudenthal Institute in Holland, this virtual manipulative can increase class interest by providing a multimedia complement to real world classroom instruction. This smaller rekenrek has two rows of ten beads (each has five white and five red), which can be used to teach counting, how to find missing addends, multiple ways of making a given number, among many other applications.
