Number Line Draw

Number Line Draw
You can always count on a number line (ba-dum ching!) to keep numbers straight. Providing order and predictability, number lines are a great classroom tool for teaching counting, addition, multiplication, negative numbers, and more.
This online number line is an engaging tool you can use to introduce students to this important concept. How does it work? Click and drag the black rectangle at the top of the screen to move the number line left or right. Tap the number one in the bottom right-hand corner to choose the interval or scale for the number line. Using a different scale can help children count by multiples.
You can also write on the number line with the color of your choice. Tap a color and then write numbers, draw arrows, or model operations. Erase your drawings by tapping the trashcan button.
Wondering how to use the virtual number line for lessons? Here are a few ideas to try:
-
Counting: Ask students to count by 1s, 2s, 3s, and more. Students can mark the numbers as they go. When skip counting, students can make little hills or mountains to jump over the numbers they’re skipping. How high can you count?
-
Model Addition and Subtraction Problems: Have students model addition problems. Use one color to draw a line representing the first addend. Then, use another color to represent the second addend. Where the second line ends, you’ll find the sum.
Do the same for subtraction problems. Starting from zero, use one color to make a line representing the minuend. Then, draw a second line above the first, showing the subtrahend (also starting from 0). Now, count the difference.
-
Working with Negative Numbers: Introduce students to negative numbers. Have students scroll on the number line to the left of zero. What do they see? Negative numbers. Reinforce the concept by having them practice subtraction problems that have a negative number as the difference.
