Number Line Time

Number Line Time
Plan your whole day with the number line timeline! Block off time for reading, math, and most importantly, recess while practicing telling time.
How does the time number line work? Scroll through time by clicking and dragging on the black rectangle at the top of the screen. The timeline’s scale shows five minutes increments. Tap the :05 button to show every 15 minutes, half hour, or every hour. Then, click and drag a colored square or circle onto the timeline. Each square or circle represents five minutes. Use different colors to represent different amounts of time or activities.
In the classroom, you can use the online number line time to help children learn to plan and tell time. Some activities to try include:
-
Ask students to block off a half hour with squares. How many squares do they need? Have students show different amounts of time using the squares.
-
Ask students to block out their morning using a different colored square to represent each activity. How long does it take them to get ready for school? How long do they need to get to school? How many hours to they spend at school?
-
Ask students to find different times of the day on the timeline. For example, seven thirty, noon, or three twenty-five. You can use the timeline alongside a paper analog clock to compare times.
