About James Whistler
James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) was an American-born, British-based artist. While best known for his portrait “Whistler’s Mother,” he also created moody, atmospheric paintings called “Nocturnes.” These works emphasized tone and harmony rather than detailed stories, making him a pioneer of modern art.
