Snowflake

Snowflake Activity
Create Your Own Digital Snowflakes
The Snowflake activity is a fun art tool that lets students design endless snowflake patterns. Kids can choose different colors, place four dots (or more), and then hit the spiral spin button to see their shape repeat in rotational symmetry. Each creation is unique, encouraging exploration of design and geometry.
How It Works
To begin, select a color from the palette at the bottom of the screen. Place four dots to form the corners of a polygon. You can add additional dots to create variations. Then, tap the spin button and watch your design transform into a snowflake. Clear the board with the trashcan icon and start fresh whenever you’d like.
Explore Rotational Symmetry
This activity highlights rotational symmetry, where a shape is repeated around a central point. Students can experiment with spacing, colors, and dot placement to see how each choice changes the resulting pattern. For a related tool, try the Spin activity, which also explores symmetry through lines and shapes.
Classroom Ideas
- Challenge students to create designs with dots close together versus far apart. Compare the results.
- Experiment with only warm or cool colors to discuss how color families affect the design.
- Encourage students to redraw their favorite snowflake on paper to connect digital and traditional artmaking.
- Use the activity as a springboard for discussing polygons and symmetry in math and nature.
