Parallelogram Area

Discover how to find the area of a parallelogram with this free interactive math manipulative. Drag the corners to change its size and slant while opposite sides remain parallel. Live measurements connect each change to the formula: area = base × height.

How to Use Parallelogram Area

Drag a dotted circle to adjust the parallelogram, then release it to snap to a grid point. Use the square grid, dashed enclosing rectangle, and perpendicular height marker to examine the shape. Select Show Area to hide or reveal the calculation.

Understand Perpendicular Height

A parallelogram’s height is the perpendicular distance between its parallel bases. It is not usually the length of a sloping side. The right-angle marker makes this distinction visible as students reshape the parallelogram.

Try keeping the base horizontal and moving an upper corner sideways without changing its height. The slant changes, but the area stays the same. Then increase the base or height and observe how the area grows. This virtual manipulative supports geometry lessons, classroom demonstrations, and practice with square units.
