Coin Jar
Are you looking for a new and exciting way to practice addition and subtraction? As many teachers are aware, coins and money are a sure way to interest children in lessons. This virtual coin jar is a great resource for lessons related to money, addition, subtraction, multiplication, estimation, and more!
To use the virtual coin jar, simply click and drag coins into the jar. Click the trashcan symbol to empty the jar. You can also click and drag coins from the jar to remove them individually.
Do you need some inspiration for using our virtual coin jar? Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Brain Teaser: If you’re teaching estimation, project the coin jar on the board and fill it with an assortment of coins. Then, give students 20 seconds to estimate how many dollars are in the jar. Whoever is closest wins a prize!
- Modeling Math Operations: Ask students to use the virtual coin jar to model addition, subtraction, and multiplication problems. Do a few examples with the whole class to make sure everyone’s on the same page before allowing students to work on their own.
- Sum Challenge: Give students a dollar amount such as $2.35. Then, ask students to create that quantity in three different ways, each time putting the coins in the jar.
- Play Store: Have students pretend to run a store in which they buy and sell items. Students can put price tags on classroom items. Then, other students can “pay” by putting the correct number of coins in the jar.
